Busy Week

It all started Easter Sunday, March 31st, on a quiet afternoon.

It was a lot of hard work, checking on the expectant mommies or the "heavies" every two hours and helping as needed.  We all got very tired.

Twenty Five total, from 12 mommies.  Twenty Four of which came in one weeks time. Twice we had 3 mommies deliver on the same day with a total of 5 babies.  The record came on Sat. April 6th with 6 babies in a day, done by two mommies having triplets.  Number twenty five came a few days later on Tuesday April 9th.

This is AB (Abe) named for the fact that he came out tail first. A few of the does needed some gentle encouragement, but AB had be be extracted.

We're Geting There, Slowly

During Christmas break we got started with the insulation.

President's Day weekend, Megan has been home from her mission for a week so we put her to work.  With her help we finished getting the sheetrock hung,

the joints taped and the first coat of mud completed.

 After much discussion on what finish and texture for the walls, I decided to use the farmer method.  That is to just use the talents, materials and resources that you have. Since the closest talent I have to sheetrock texturing is concrete finishing, I got out my favorite concrete trowel and the left over taping mud and went to work.

It is hard to see the detail but here are the walls textured, painted and glazed.

Update

I hesitated to cut a hole in the roof, but it had to be done to install the support box for the wood stove chimney pipe.

Testing the little wood stove that Janna found at an antique store in Hurricane ($80.00).  5/8 fire rated sheetrock installed on the wall.  The picture is a little blurry due to low light.

Heating up left overs from the new Costa Vida in Fillmore for lunch.  The sheetrock behind has a thick layer of drywall mud.  The picture does not show the hand troweled texture, but none of it will show.  The sheetrock will be covered up with rock and/or corrugated metal. 

Snow has melted, driveway a little muddy, light rain accompanied by a double rainbow.

Another congested commute.

It took me longer than I had planned, but the electrical is now finished.

I wired for both 110 and 12 volt systems.  The plan for now is to use solar to charge 12 volt batteries for the cabin power source.  I ran 110 in case I want to hook up to the grid in the future.

The good news is that the cabin is now ready to be insulated and then the ceiling and wall coverings can be installed.  I still am not quite sure on what exactly the interior finish will be.

Modern Conveniences

One of the first priorities after getting the septic and the water connected is to get the bathroom in working order.  This is the tub/shower ready for tile or something barnyish.  Process is: moisture barrier, hardy backer, red guard.

This is my experiment with barn type materials,  corrugated sheet metal.  I still need to trim out the window.

 I am liking my home made tub and shower valve.

I have connected a small (5 gal.) propane water heater.  The showers need to be short but that is better than using the sink at the park restrooms.

We or I try to spend the night when possible to save a little on gas money.  Over the weekend Kanosh received about 12 inches of snow.  Monday I got started on my latest "To Do" list.  Monday night it was approx. 15 degrees outside but inside it only got down to 35 degrees.  Tuesday was a beautiful sunny 38 degrees.

I am working on getting a little wood stove installed to help warm things up.  I am not far enough along to show any pictures of that project.  But, one of the things on my list was the shower curtain rod.  I used 3/4 inch copper pipe to match the tub and shower valve.

 

 

 

October Update

September: Installed 4 inch sewer line, connecting the cabarn to the inlet side of the previously installed septic tank.  I must have straightened it up before back fill.




Also ran the  1 inch water line from the 2 inch main line installed last fall.

The end of Sept. or the first part of Oct. I built and installed two doors.

The doors are made of knotty pine.

I am still trying to come up with some interesting latching hardware.

 

The plan for October was to get things cleaned up, finish grading, place concrete and gravel, etc.  Now if the weather gets bad and things get muddy we should be okay.

 Mom, was in charge of finishing the curb around the barn area.  She did a great job and I would have been in trouble without her help.






We did a non-typical stamp pattern on the front porch.

After back filling and spreading some gravel, it is starting to look pretty good.

I will have to get a better picture of the graveling.

Fall is upon us, so that means taking time to make a trip up the canyon.

Red and yellow leaves, fire roasted hot dogs, and some family to enjoy them with; what could be better?

Rush Hour

I got off of the I-15 headed into Kanosh about 9:00 am Monday morning.  I will have to remember to avoid rush hour from now on.

I had just gotten through one stretch of bumper to bumper traffic and I ran into another group of commuters.

These turkeys took their sweet time crossing the road.  Sometimes you just want to honk at the turkey in front of you.

Why did the turkey cross the road?
I need some grandchildren to help me come up with an answer.

Little by Little

8/25/12 Getting started on the exterior trim.  With Kevin's help we got the side and the front completed.  The barn siding is 1/2 inch CDX plywood with rough sawn 1x4 batts.




Labor Day weekend we returned to complete the siding trim and a few other projects.

 

Not very many pictures of Mom because she is usually taking the pics, but, she works hard on the project too.

The Labor Day weekend projects also included the loft above the kitchen and bathroom.

 

We also got the wall between the cabin and the barn enclosed.

 

Mom was worn out, but she can't resist taking pictures of a good sunset.

Next I need to make a couple of doors.  I am not quite sure on their design yet.
